Central Gala - November 5 - 2005
Stirling Swimming Club had 70 swimmers competing in the recent Central Championships. Great swims throughout the day meant the club produced its best result in recent years to win the Top Team Trophy. Rivals Alloa have held this trophy for the last seven years. Five Stirling swimmers also won trophies for overall champions in their age groups. In the 10 and Under Boys Craig Coull took 3rd in 50m Breaststroke and 5th in the Freestyle. Gareth Allan swam brilliantly in his first gala to get 4th in the Freestyle and 6th in the Backstroke. Scott MacArthur, also in his first gala, finished 6th in the 50m Breaststroke. These three boys were joined by Ryan Bennet to finish 2nd and 3rd in their two relay events.
In the 10 and Under Girls Nicole Govan had a superb day winning the 50m Butterfly, Backstroke and Freestyle. She was 3rd in the Breaststroke and convincingly took the Overall Trophy. Nikoline Laidlaw also had a good day finishing 2nd in the Backstroke and Breaststroke, 3rd in the Butterfly and 4th in the Freestyle. Nikoline finished runner-up to Nicole in the Overall Age Group.In the same age group Kayrine Kelly finished 5th in the Butterfly and 6th in the Backstroke, Lucy Brunton was 4th in the Backstroke and 6th in the Butterfly and Rachel Bond was 6th in the Freestyle. The girls also took first in the Freestyle relay. In the 11 Year Boys James Dodds swam well to finish 4th in the 100m Breaststroke and David Kelly took 5th in the Backstroke. They were joined by Campbell Keith and Daniel Morrison to get great 1st places in both their relays. Stirling had its second overall champion in the 11 Years Girls event when Sarah Colvin won the Butterfly and finished 2nd in the Backstroke, Breaststroke and the Freestyle. Lauren Burns also swam well to get 3rd in the Breaststroke, 5th in the Backstroke and 6th in the Butterfly. Fiona King just pipped Lauren in the Butterfly to finish 5th. With Chloe Stickland and Rebekah Brewster the girls finished 3rd in the relay events. Martin Cremin had some close races with his Grangemouth rival in the 12/13 Years. Martin won the 100m Freestyle and Butterfly but was just beaten into 2nd place in the Breaststroke and Backstroke meaning he shared the Overall Age Group Trophy. Blair Dick swam well to finish 3rd in the 100m Freestyle and 4th in the Butterfly whilst Kyle Bennet finished 4th in the Breaststroke and 5th in the Freestyle. Duncan MacArthur then helped his team-mates to two superb first places in the relays. In the 12/13 Girls Genna Doctor swam a PB to win the 100m Breaststroke and also took 4th place in the Freestyle. Stephanie Hanley was just behind in the breaststroke to take 2nd place and also finished runner-up in the Butterfly and Freestyle and 3rd in the Backstroke. Heather King also took 6th place in both the Freestyle and Backstroke. Carole Roberts and Katrina Laidlaw then helped these girls to 2nd places in the relays. In the 14/15 Boys David Steele swam well to finish 6th in the Breaststroke whilst Stuart Gillespie also finished 6th in the Butterfly. Andrew Loudon, Peter Shulga and Grant Nutley helped them to 2nd places in their relays. Stirling dominated in the 14/15 Girls. Jade Williams won the 100m Butterfly, Breaststroke and Backstroke. With a 2nd place in the Freestyle she took the Overall trophy in her age group and also the the trophy for best swimmer of the day. Rosie Ogg managed to hold off Jade to win the freestyle by 4 seconds but had to settle for 2nd in the Butterfly, Breaststroke and Backstroke. Kayleigh McGurk had good swims to finish 5th in the Freestyle and 6th in the Butterfly and Backstroke. Jill Morrison finished 4th in the Butterfly and 6th in the Freestyle whilst Victoria Elder was 5th in the Backstroke and 6th in the Breaststroke. Morven Bruce managed to make it 1-2-3 for Stirling finishing 3rd in the Breaststroke. The girls easily won both their relays. Steven Binnie was the Club’s final Overall Age Group Champion winning the 16+ Years Backstroke, Breaststroke and Freestyle and finishing 2nd in the Butterfly. Craig Gillespie was 2nd in the Breaststroke and 4th in the Butterfly, Backstroke and Freestyle. Louise Williams in the 16+ Girls had two 3rd places in the Butterfly and Freestyle and two 5th places in the Backstroke and Backstroke. Megan Tully had two 4th places in the Freestyle and Butterfly and 6th in both the Backstroke and Breaststroke. It was a great day for all the Stirling swimmers with most recording personal best times.
